Thai palace official fired and stripped of titles

A senior member of the personal security retinue of Thailand's new king has been fired and stripped of his titles, the palace has announced, the latest royal official to publicly fall from grace. Air Vice Marshal Chitpong Thongkum was accused of improperly using his connections to King Maha Vajiralongkorn in a statement published in the Royal Gazette on Sunday. "His army rank has been withdrawn and his royal decorations have been rescinded," the statement said, adding that he had "behaved in a way that brought about distrust and caused severe damage to the royal family".


Pirates kill Vietnamese sailor, kidnap six others

Pirates have attacked a Vietnamese-flagged cargo ship off the southern Philippines, killing one seaman and abducting at least six others in a region notorious for such attacks, officials said Monday. The MV Giang Hai was attacked by pirates Sunday near the southernmost Philippine island of Baguan near the Malaysian coast, said coast guard spokesman Armand Balilo. Philippine coast guard speedboats reached the scene but found one Vietnamese dead and at least six others abducted, said military spokesman Colonel Edgard Arevalo.

Thirteen Philippine college students on a camping holiday and a bus driver were killed and dozens injured on Monday when their bus slammed into an electricity post in a mountainous region, police said. The bus, rented by a Manila private school, was taking over 50 teenage students and an instructor on the trip when the driver lost control on a downhill slope in the town of Tanay, said regional police spokesman Superintendent Chitadel Gaoiran. Ten students were killed on the spot while four other people including the bus driver died in hospital, officials said.

Arthur Lascanas, sitting alongside three prominent human rights lawyers, broke down in tears as he listed a series of murders in Davao city that he alleged Duterte ordered either to eliminate critics or fight crime. Lascanas said he even killed his two brothers, who were involved in drug trafficking, due to "blind loyalty" to Duterte as well as cash rewards.

Almost 40 others including the bus driver were injured in the accident, said Bong Bati, the civil defence officer at Tanay in Rizal province east of Manila.
