Merkel warns of tough talks as clock ticks on coalition deal

Thu, 11/16/2017 - 10:17

Chancellor Angela Merkel warned that "serious differences" remain between the parties hoping to form Germany's next government but voiced hope a deal would emerge Thursday, hours before a deadline that could trigger snap polls. The awkward bedfellows, who differ on everything from refugees to climate protection and EU reforms, have been pushed together by September's inconclusive election, which left Merkel badly weakened as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) lured millions of voters.

Russia 'not compliant' over doping as Olympics loom

Thu, 11/16/2017 - 09:56

Russia moved a step closer to being barred from the Winter Olympics in February when the World Anti-Doping Agency declined to lift its suspension of Moscow's national anti-doping body on Thursday. In a blow to Russia, the World Anti-Doping Agency maintained its suspension of the Russian body, RUSADA, which it first imposed in 2015 as evidence emerged of widespread cheating. WADA's decision comes before the International Olympic Committee's executive board meets next month to consider whether Russia can compete at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

ASEAN fails to condemn attacks on Rohingya

Thu, 11/16/2017 - 09:29

Southeast Asian leaders kept silent over accusations of ethnic cleansing carried out by Myanmar's army in a statement Thursday, instead expressing support for the country's efforts to bring peace and harmony to northern Rakhine state. More than 600,000 Muslim Rohingya have fled mainly Buddhist Myanmar since a military crackdown was launched in Rakhine in August, which the United Nations and watchdogs have said amounts to ethnic cleansing.

Turkey capital bans German gay film festival

Thu, 11/16/2017 - 09:13

Turkish authorities have banned a festival of German-language gay films due to kick off in the capital Ankara Thursday on the grounds it could incite hatred and be at risk from a terror attack. The festival organisers, Pink Life QueerFest, planned to screen four films by German directors over two days at cinemas in the Turkish capital, in an event backed by the German embassy. "It has been judged that this film screening... could be provocative and, because of social sensitivities, some segments of society could react." But Pink Life QueerFest criticised the move, saying it "deprives us of our constitutional rights," in a statement on their website.

Indonesia smugglers stuffed exotic birds in pipes: police

Thu, 11/16/2017 - 08:32

Smugglers who allegedly stuffed 125 exotic birds into drain pipes have been arrested in Indonesia, officials said Thursday, as part of a bid to clamp down on a lucrative illegal trade in wildlife. Four men have been charged after 41 endangered white cockatoos and 84 eclectus parrots were discovered squashed into plastic piping that had been cut and sealed at each end by wire. Police said the men were arrested in four separate locations in eastern Indonesia, and are part of a suspected wildlife trafficking ring.

A North Korean soldier shot multiple times while defecting to the South is in a stable condition but riddled with parasites that could complicate his chances of survival, his doctor said Thursday. The young man was rushed to hospital in South Korea by helicopter where he has undergone two rounds of emergency surgery. "We're paying close attention to prevent possible complications," said Lee, who on Wednesday said "an enormous number of parasites" including roundworms had been found in the small intestine.

Cambodia court to rule on opposition party's dissolution

Thu, 11/16/2017 - 06:57

Cambodian opposition politicians braced for the Supreme Court to dissolve their party on Thursday, as judges weighed a government lawsuit seen as strongman Hun Sen's final bid to eliminate his competition ahead of 2018 polls. Hun Sen, a firebrand former Khmer Rouge fighter who has held office for 32 years, has already promised a guilty verdict will be delivered on Thursday -- a ruling most agree is inevitable in a justice system firmly under the premier's thumb. The case against the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), the country's main opposition party, could see over 100 politicians banned from office for five years.

World anti-doping body refuses to lift Russia suspension

Thu, 11/16/2017 - 06:21

The World Anti-Doping Agency maintained its suspension of Russia on Thursday, raising the spectre of a possible ban from February's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. WADA's Foundation Board, meeting in Seoul, came to the decision after its Compliance Review Committee recommended that Russia's anti-doping body, RUSADA, "should not be reinstated". The decision had been expected after Russia refused to admit running a state-sponsored doping system, as detailed in an explosive report for WADA by Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren.

Nepal's musicians retune to tradition

Thu, 11/16/2017 - 03:38

Nepal's musical heritage is enjoying a revival as young musicians fuse the sounds of traditional instruments once at risk of disappearing with lyrics that examine the modern challenges facing the country. The Himalayan country has a rich folk tradition, but its unusual traditional instruments -- which include a leaf from a native tree that is played like a harmonica -- were dying out as younger generations moved towards Western music styles. Now the 33-year-old singer's musical repertoire includes the more esoteric Sarangi, a three-stringed instrument made of wood and dried sheep skin whose sounds are said to closely resemble the human voice, as well as the deeper-sounding Piwancha.
